What's New in the RC Model Industry

Radio controlled cars, planes, helicopters, and boats are getting faster, lighter, and simply - more fun! Since around 2004, lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries have been introduced to the hobby industry, which offered more power, longer run times, and overall lighter packaging. The brushless motor has also been fine tuned, engineered smaller, lighter, and faster than ever before, along with advanced, more compact electronic speed controllers. These two technology introductions helped push the industry to the next level by allowing manufacturers and hobbyists to create smaller, lighter, and faster models that offered longer flight and run times.

RC Helicopters

RC Helicopters have long been known as a more advanced model, requiring at least intermediate level skills to pilot. The new lighter battery technology allows for an overall lighter weight, so companies such as AirHogs have been able to mold foam around all the electronics into the newest trend - micro RC Helicopters. These helicopters can fit in the palm of your hand, and typically run 2-channel radios. One channel controls the speed of the main blades, and the 2nd controls the speed of the rotor, allowing you to control lift and direction.

RC Rock Crawlers

Rock crawlers have been growing popular in the automotive industry. Jeeps and pickups are being converted with customized suspension systems, tires, and chassis to offer extreme articulation and ability to 'crawl' over just about any terrain. Just like the auto industry, RC rock crawlers have been invented following suit. Hobbyists used to take bare chassis and build custom suspension and control arms to introduce yet a whole new category within the RC hobby. Now there are competitive events for RC rock crawling where competitors can race the clock to maneuver their truck through a course, avoiding cones, all against other racers.
